Many have turned to standing desks or treadmill desks in order to combine activity with work.
The benefits of standing desks are simple. They reduce your overall sedentary time, and some studies have shown that standing desks can improve mood. Treadmill desks allow for active calorie burn throughout the day.
However, there are some things to consider when it comes to using standing desks:
- It can be hard to concentrate while figuring out the best way to stand. Our brains do some tasks better while we are sitting, so the benefits of a standing desk can depend on your job.
- Using a standing desk can place strain on your muscles, especially your neck and shoulders.
- Standing all day can compress your spine and lead to lower back pain, along with an increased risk of varicose veins.
In general, both sitting and standing all day carry different risks. While you can still try out a standing desk to see if it benefits you in your workplace, the best option might be to try as often as you can to switch back and forth between standing and sitting, in order to alleviate the risk factors of both.
Look for fun and interesting ways to move throughout your work day, such as adding in a brisk walk at lunch or doing some quick jumping jacks while you wait for your lunch to warm up.
