The Impact of Childhood Obesity

The Impact of Childhood Obesity
According to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about a third of children and adolescents are considered overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. Childhood obesity is a growing concern due to the immediate and long-term effects of carrying around extra pounds early in life.

Short-Term Effects of Childhood Obesity

Children who remain overweight are more likely to experience back pain or joint-related discomfort due to added stress on supporting muscles and tissues. Obesity may also contribute to acne or make an outbreak more noticeable than it would be otherwise. Excess weight may also increase instances of experiencing skin issues such as heat rash and various fungal infections. Spine, joint, and bone problems, in particular, can be more worrisome for children since growth is still taking place at this point in life. Overweight children may also have issues with self-esteem and other psychological problems.

Long-Term Impact of Childhood Obesity

Children who are obese are likely to have weight problems during adolescence and into adulthood. Long-term health risks associated with childhood obesity include increased odds of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, elevated cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. Many of these conditions involve significant healthcare costs for medications, doctors' visits, and hospitalization. The American Diabetes Association reports type 2 diabetes is on the rise among children due to the obesity epidemic in the United States. It's a trend that may lead to one in three Americans having diabetes by 2050.

Possible Causes and Contributing Factors

Unhealthy eating patterns and a lack of regular physical activity are the main contributing factors to childhood obesity trends nationwide, according to numerous studies, with contributing issues including a growing reliance on various electronic devices and a move towards sedentary lifestyles. In some cases, obesity in children is related to a medical condition or hormone problem. While obesity may run in families, simply having a family history of weight issues doesn't automatically mean a child will be overweight. Overall lifestyle also plays a role in determining whether or not weight becomes a serious concern.

The effects of childhood obesity are best tackled on an individual basis. Make simple dietary adjustments by incorporating healthy food choices into regular meals. Encourage regular exercise and activity. If you need some extra guidance, ask your pediatrician or family doctor for suggestions or consider working with a dietician specializing in childhood nutrition.
