Tips for Coping with Vertigo
Vertigo is the sensation of falling or spinning around even when that movement isn't actually occurring. Most people will experience this sensation at some point in their life, especially when they stand up too quickly or are experiencing illness. However, for others, episodes of vertigo are frequent and long-term. Individuals who feel like they are experiencing vertigo so often that it affects their functionality should seek advice from a medical professional.

Vertigo is a symptom of many different illnesses, many of which aren't serious, but identifying the cause can help the physician determine how to alleviate the symptoms. Peripheral vertigo, or vertigo caused by inner ear problems, can often be cured by removing particles in the ear canal. Central vertigo, or vertigo that is caused by spine problems, is often caused by illnesses that are chronic, such as migraines, various autoimmune diseases, and head injuries.

Since these are on-going conditions, it may not be possible to entirely eliminate vertigo. However, there are many techniques that these patients can try to decrease the severity and frequency of the episodes as well as improve their quality of life.

Maintain a Regular Sleep Schedule

Research studies continue to show that sleep deprivation can have serious health consequences. One of these potential consequences is vertigo. This is because when our bodies are exhausted, they become hypersensitive to external stimuli. A lot of what causes vertigo is based in our ear, so making our ears more sensitive can lead to episodes of vertigo. Additionally, the position that we sleep in can affect the amount of oxygen that our brain is receiving throughout the night. If the brain is deprived of oxygen throughout the night, it will be trying to replenish these levels during the day, which can lead to dizziness.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking an adequate amount of water is debatably the most important thing that can be done to alleviate vertigo. Maintaining hydration is important for many functions throughout our bodies, including regulating blood pressure and blood sugar. Dehydration can lead to tiredness and dizziness very quickly, but maintaining a water intake schedule can drastically reduce the number of vertigo episodes a person experiences. It is also important to drink the water throughout the day in reasonably even amounts. Drinking coffee all morning, then chugging water in excessive amounts will likely cause an imbalance in blood pressure that may cause more symptoms than it alleviates.

Dietary Changes

Sometimes a few small dietary changes will make a huge difference. Sometimes vertigo is linked to deficiencies in either vitamin B12 or vitamin D. If laboratory testing shows that this is a possibility, this can be solved by consuming certain foods or taking supplements. Some people also find it helpful to regulate their salt intake as sodium levels can directly influence blood pressure.
