A new analysis published in the journal Pediatrics indicates that many scientists do not publish the results of their work when the studies involve children.
In previous studies, it has been found that approximately one third of all clinical trials in the United States are not published and shared with the scientific community. Two pediatricians from Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital sought to find out whether studies that focused on children were any different. However, they found that these research trials were just as likely not to be published.
The report reviewed clinical trials that started in 2008 to 2010 and found that 19 percent of these studies that involved child participants were not completed. Of the ones that were completed, 30 percent did not have the results published.
One of the pediatricians responsible for the review suggests that some scientists may avoid publishing results if they believe that the trial has failed to prove the results that they were looking for.
This brings some problems to the scientific community, because we end up with a limited view of only studies that do work, and scientists who repeat failed trials that have already been completed but not published.
