Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Not to Be Used, Group Votes
This week, a panel of experts that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)—voted that the FluMist Quadrivalent vaccine should not be used.

The nasal spray vaccine has been popular among many patients, especially children who prefer it as an alternative to the vaccine administered as a shot.

The group made this recommendation based on the findings that the spray has not been as effective as the shot during the last few flu seasons. The collected data, which looked at children ages two to 17 years, showed that the nasal spray vaccine did not appear to offer protection during the most recent flu season. Additionally, the data showed that the vaccine performed poorly in the two prior flu seasons.

This recommendation must first be reviewed and approved by the director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before it becomes a policy.

Unfortunately, scientists have not been able to determine why the nasal spray vaccine has become ineffective, but AstraZeneca, the maker of FluMist, plans to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in order to better understand the scientific data and to help patients receive the vaccine in the future.

The flu shot is recommended for nearly every patient age six months and older.
