A new study published in the journal Neurology by the American Academy of Neurology has shown that obesity can increase risk of the most common type of stroke. However, obesity appears to also lower the risk of a different type of stroke.
The British study was looked at 1.3 million women and tracked the women (averaging 57 years old) for 12 years. The researchers discovered that women who were overweight or obese were more likely to suffer from an ischemic stroke. This type of stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked, and it is the most common type of stroke (the American Stroke Association indicates that ischemic strokes account for approximately 87% of all stroke cases).
However, the same study showed that overweight or obese women were less likely to experience a hemorrhagic stroke. This type of stroke is less common and accounts for only approximately 13% of all cases. The study’s results indicate that different types of strokes have different risk factors.
Experts are warning that regardless of the study’s results, the best way to stay healthy and to prevent strokes is to maintain a healthy weight. The vice chair of neurology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, Dr. Richard Libman, reviewed the findings of the study. His message is that “overall, obesity causes more harm than good.”
