A new study has revealed the science
behind vigorously exercising for one minute in order to improve health.
During the study, which was published in the journal
PLOS ONE, researchers asked nine men to do one minute of cycling on a
stationary bike at high intensity levels. This was to be repeated three times a
week for 12 weeks. During the exercise period, there were three 20-second
bursts with maximum effort and two-minute recovery periods with moderate
intensity cycling. The men in the study were previously sedentary.
These nine men were compared to a
second group made up of 10 men, who participated in moderate intensity cycling
for 45 minutes three times a week, and a third group of six men who did not do
any exercise.
Following the 12-week study,
researchers found that the men who exercised at a high intensity for one minute
and the men who had exercised at moderate intensity for 45 minutes had similar
improvements in endurance, blood sugar control, and muscle function when
compared to the men who did not exercise at all.
Martin J. Gibala, the study’s lead researcher
and a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University, stated that the study
shows how brief, intense exercise can be effective. However, maintaining
maximum effort for a full minute can be challenging, and recovery periods in
exercise (as well as warm-up and cool-down periods) are still important for
your body.
