According to CNN Health, a baby girl with Zika-related microcephaly was born on Tuesday in a New Jersey hospital.
The baby’s mother is visiting the United States from Honduras and wishes to not be identified in the media. The mother visited the New Jersey hospital last week, where an ultrasound revealed that the baby had microcephaly, a condition that is characterized by a small brain size. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) later confirmed the diagnosis of the Zika virus. The mother was likely infected during her second trimester of pregnancy.
The pregnant mother began noticing symptoms related to the Zika virus, including fever and rash. After visiting her doctor, it was suspected that the baby was experiencing growth problems. The mother traveled to the United States because she reportedly suspected that her baby had problems related to the Zika virus, and she hoped to receive better medical care in the States than what is available in Honduras. She delivered by cesarean section after doctors determined it was in the best interest of the mother and baby, who was found to have low levels of amniotic fluid.
This is the second case of a Zika-related birth in the United States. The first baby to born with the condition was in Hawaii. Currently, more than 300 pregnant women in the United States and its territories have been diagnosed with the Zika virus. They are being followed with a national registry.
