A new study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health shows that patients with diabetes are more likely to die following a heart attack than patients who do not have diabetes.
The study looked at 700,000 people who were hospitalized for a heart attack between January 2003 and June 2013. Approximately 121,000 of the patients had diabetes.
Researchers discovered that those with diabetes were 56 percent more likely to die following a heart attack that was caused by a completely blocked coronary artery. Following a heart attack caused by a partially blocked coronary artery, patients with diabetes were 39 percent more likely to die when compared to patients without diabetes.
The study did not reveal the cause for its findings, so researchers hope to figure out why the risk of death is higher in diabetic patients. While diabetes itself could contribute to the death risk, it could also be that conditions that often coincide with diabetes are actually to blame.
The study’s lead researcher, Dr. Chris Gale, stated that the results indicated that more focus needs to be placed on the long-term effects of diabetes, especially in heart attack survivors. Dr. Gale is a consultant cardiologist and an associate professor at the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
