A team of doctors at Baylor University Medical Center released a statement about four uterine transplants that were performed in September. They are considering the results of the procedure “cautiously optimistic” for one of the transplants.
Two years of preparation and a review of the 16 uterine transplants already performed worldwide came before the surgeries, which were performed in Dallas, Texas. The surgeons were assisted by Swedish doctors who have seen good results from uterine transplants in the past.
During routine follow-ups, it was discovered that three of the patients did not have sufficient blood flow to the transplanted uterus, so the organs were removed. However, in the fourth patient, the blood flow results were positive and there are no current signs of infection or organ rejection.
No information about the patients has been released, but the typical candidates for a uterine transplant are women who were born without one. Transplanted uteruses are not permanent due to the risk of organ rejection, so the organs are removed after one or two successful pregnancies with in vitro fertilization.
Although this is a promising procedure for women who wish to carry their own children, a lot of work needs to be done to make it more successful. The three failed transplants will provide information about what can be done to change the protocols for this surgery.
