A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition indicates that a combination of some dairy foods with vitamin D supplements can help to protect against osteoporosis that is related to age.
The study was performed by researchers at Hebrew Senior Life and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. The participants were enrolled in the long-term Framingham Study, which began in 1948 and followed the participants’ habits and overall health.
The study’s lead author, Shivani Sahni (director of the nutrition program at Hebrew Senior Life’s Institute for Aging Research), stated that the study clarified that the positive effect that dairy has on bone density is dependent on vitamin D intake.
The researchers involved in the study found that consuming dairy products like yogurt, cheese, and milk was only associated with higher bone mineral density in the spine (and less bone loss in the hip) when combined with vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D is already known for helping to stimulate the absorption of calcium, which is necessary for preventing bone loss. Further study is needed to confirm these findings, according to the researchers.
It is estimated that approximately 10 million Americans older than 50 years of age have osteoporosis, a condition characterized by reduced bone mass. This condition puts patients at risk of fractures, physical function issues, and even death.
This study was funded by the U.S. National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
