Non-Surgical or Other Surgical Alternatives to Cervical Cerclage:

Non-surgical alternatives to cervical cerclage include bed rest and taking medications that are designed to prevent contractions of the cervix. There are no comparable surgical alternatives to cervical cerclage.

Anesthesia with Cervical Cerclage:

Cervical cerclage is usually performed under regional anesthesia. In some cases, it might be performed under general anesthesia, where the patient is asleep and completely unaware during the procedure.

Potential Complications from Cervical Cerclage:

Potential complications of cervical cerclage include bleeding, cramping, infection and a negative reaction to the anesthesia that is used. Other risks include rupture of membranes. Some patients are unable to dilate normally during labor or still experience premature contractions.

Prognosis after Cervical Cerclage:

The prognosis for a positive end result following cervical cerclage is good. Many patients who need a cervical cerclage will need one for future pregnancies as well.

Recovery from Cervical Cerclage:

The total recovery time for a cervical cerclage is two to three days.
