During laparoscopic ileostomy, the ileum (the last
part of the small intestine) is connected to the abdominal wall. This allows
liquid waste moving through the intestine to drain from the abdominal opening
into a pouch on the outside of the body. This procedure is performed after
removing the large intestine and is done with a minimally invasive method that
utilizes a laparoscope (a small video camera) and small instruments inserted
through small incisions.
