During modified
radical mastoidectomy, the ear drum and mastoid bone are repaired through an
incision made behind the ear. To reach the mastoid, the bony partition located
between the mastoid and external ear is removed.
Also Known As:
- Skull surgery
- Repair of the ear drum and mastoid
Conditions Treated with Modified Radical
Mastoidectomy:
Modified radical
mastoidectomy may be performed in cases of trauma, perforated ear drum and
cholesteatoma of the ear drum and mastoid.
There are no
comparable non-surgical or surgical alternatives to modified radical
mastoidectomy.
Anesthesia with Modified Radical
Mastoidectomy:
Modified radical
mastoidectomy is performed under general anesthesia, which means that the
patient is asleep and completely unaware during the procedure.
Potential Complications from Modified Radical
Mastoidectomy:
Possible risks
following modified radical mastoidectomy include infection, bleeding, tinnitus,
facial paralysis, hearing loss, taste abnormalities and a negative reaction to
the anesthesia. It is also possible to experience temporary dizziness.
Recovery from Modified Radical Mastoidectomy:
Total recovery from
modified radical mastoidectomy takes four
weeks.
