Advances in curriculum can increase anxiety in students, but the solutions might be found at school as well as at home. Researchers from Tulane University found that school-based yoga helped to improve the overall well-being and the emotional health of third graders who showed signs of stress and anxiety.
The researchers worked with a public school where third graders showing symptoms of anxiety were divided into two groups. In one group of 32 students, the control group, received counseling and other typical care provided by a school social worker. The second group, with 20 students, practiced age-appropriate yoga poses and breathing exercises in small group sessions for eight weeks.
Next, The Brief Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale-Peabody Treatment Progress Battery was used to assess life satisfaction, while the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory was used to measure emotional well-being and psychosocial conditions. Both research tools are widely recognized.
The results showed that the students who participated in the yoga program showed improvements in anxiety and stress symptoms when compared with the control group. The results were published in the journal of Psychology Research and Behavior Management.
This study shows that as many children express anxiety as classroom curriculum becomes more complex, yoga exercises can help to provide relief. This is even true for younger children who may experience a lot of stress around test time. Many teachers have shared about the benefits of using yoga in their classroom throughout the week.
