What is Back Surgery?

Back surgery can refer to several different methods and procedures, including:

  • Spinal fusion – The joining of two or more vertebrae with screws, rods, or bone grafting in order to improve stability in the spine.
  • Discectomy – The removal of a herniated intervertebral disc.
  • Laminectomy – The removal of the laminae (vertebrae sections around the spinal cord) in order to make the spinal canal larger and relieve pressure from nerves. This same procedure can also be used to remove tumors or to implant a catheter as part of an external pump for delivering pain medication.

Also Known As:

  • Disc surgery
  • Pain management

Non-Surgical or Other Surgical Alternatives to Back Surgery:

Many conditions of the back do not require surgery for treatment. Non-surgical alternatives that will typically be attempted first include anti-inflammatory pain medication, physical therapy, massage, ice and heat therapy and steroid injections.

Anesthesia with Back Surgery:

Depending on the circumstances of each surgery, back surgery can involve general anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, or local anesthesia.

Potential Complications from Back Surgery:

Complications of back surgery can include infection, bleeding, or a negative reaction to the anesthesia that is used. It is also possible for patients to experience no little to no improvement in pain or mobility following back surgery.

Recovery from Back Surgery:

Each back surgery is different, but it can take six to eight weeks to recover from many back surgeries.
