Saggy skin is often a result of rapid weight loss. It occurs when skin loses its elasticity, which is especially common with aging. Saggy skin is common on areas such as the stomach, arms and upper thighs.
Using strength training to tighten the underlying muscles can make saggy skin tighter and less noticeable. Use low weights and high repetitions for exercises that require dumbbells, and increase the weights in two pound increments as you become stronger.
Raises
Sit on the edge of a sturdy chair with a dumbbell in each hand. Raise your elbows to the ceiling, moving the dumbbells behind your head. While flexing your arm muscles, lift the dumbbells straight up toward the ceiling. Hold the position for five seconds, and then slowly move the dumbbells back behind your head. Repeat this exercise 10 times to tighten muscles in your arms.
Squats
While standing, hold a dumbbell in each of your hands. Cross your arms so that your weights are touching your shoulders. Lower yourself slowly by bending your knees and hold that position for five seconds. Return slowly to your starting position while keeping your arms crossed and holding the weights. Repeat this exercise ten times to strengthen muscles in your arms and thighs.
Push-Ups
Push-ups will help to strengthen muscles in your arms and upper chest. Start by getting on your hands and knees on the floor. Extend your legs backward so that your toes are supporting your lower half, and keep your hands on the floor shoulder-width apart. Using your arms and upper body, lower yourself to just an inch above the floor. Use the same muscles to push yourself back up. Repeat this exercise ten times.
Crunches
Crunches can help to tighten loose skin by strengthening your abdominal muscles. While lying on your back, bend your knees and put your feet flat on the floor. Put your hands behind your ears and use your stomach to sit up as far as possible. Lie back down on the floor and repeat the exercise ten times, keeping your stomach muscles tight.
Of course, you should always seek out advice from your doctor before starting an exercise regimen. Your doctor may recommend different types or repetitions of exercises. Additionally, visiting a cosmetic surgeon to assist with the removal of excess loose skin may be beneficial, especially if you have lost a significant amount of weight.
