A new study performed by researchers at the University of California—the most extensive longitudinal study ever to examine meditation practitioners—measured the benefits of regular meditation training for a period of three months. The study showed that the benefits of meditation were still present seven years later.
The researchers recruited two different groups of 30 participants to partake in a retreat at a meditation center in Colorado for three months. The retreat consisted of daily meditation, and assessments were given six months, 18 months, and seven years later to measure cognitive abilities such as attention span and reaction time. However, only 40 participants remained in the study for the entire seven years.
Of the 40 participants, all of them reported having some sort of routine meditation. In fact, 85 percent mentioned that they meditated about an hour each day over the seven-year period.
The researchers found that the older participants maintained more gains in attention span after the meditation training. The results indicate that regular meditation can help an individual keep a strong attention span and also avoid some of the cognitive declines that come with aging.
The study was published in the Journal of Cognitive Enhancement.
