During an
orbitotomy, surgery is performed on the orbit that contains the eye. Various
incisions are used to access the orbit.
Also Known As:
- Orbital tumor removal
- Eye surgery
- Lateral orbitotomy
- Anterior orbitotomy
Conditions Treated with an Orbitotomy:
An orbitotomy may
be performed in cases of orbital fracture, orbital tumors, orbital abscess and
a foreign body located in the eye.
There are no
comparable non-surgical or surgical alternatives to an orbitotomy.
Anesthesia with an Orbitotomy:
An orbitotomy is
performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient is asleep and
completely unaware during the procedure.
Potential Complications from an Orbitotomy:
Possible risks
following an orbitotomy include infection, bleeding, vision loss, impaired eye
movement and a negative reaction to the anesthesia.
