Also Known As:
- Parathyroid glands removal
Conditions
Treated with Parathyroidectomy:
Parathyroidectomy
may be performed in cases of parathyroid cancer, enlarged parathyroid glands
that are causing hyperparathyroidism or parathyroid hyperplasia of all four
glands.
There are
no comparable non-surgical alternatives to parathyroidectomy. Minimally
invasive parathyroidectomy may be performed as a surgical alternative.
Anesthesia with Parathyroidectomy:
Parathyroidectomy
is performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient is asleep
and completely unaware during the procedure.
Potential
Complications from Parathyroidectomy:
Possible
risks following parathyroidectomy include infection, bleeding, blood clots and
a negative reaction to the anesthesia. It is also possible to experience neck
pain, painful swallowing, hypoparathyroidism, hypocalcemia and injury to nearby
organs and tissues.
Prognosis after Parathyroidectomy:
The
prognosis for a positive end result following parathyroidectomy is good.
Recovery from Parathyroidectomy:
Total
recovery from parathyroidectomy takes one to two weeks.
