During
partial laryngectomy, the part of the larynx that sits above the vocal cords is
removed.
Also Known As:
- Partial removal of the voice box
- Supraglottic laryngectomy
Conditions
Treated with Partial Laryngectomy:
Partial
laryngectomy may be performed in cases of larynx cancer.
Radiation
therapy is a non-surgical alternative to partial laryngectomy. Surgical
alternatives to the procedure include cordectomy, total laryngectomy and vocal
cord stripping.
Anesthesia with Partial
Laryngectomy:
Partial
laryngectomy is performed under general anesthesia, which means that the
patient is asleep and completely unaware during the procedure.
Potential
Complications from Partial Laryngectomy:
Possible
risks following partial laryngectomy include infection, bleeding, nerve damage,
carotid artery rupture and a negative reaction to the anesthesia. It is also
possible to experience difficulty moving the neck and a temporary inability to
swallow.
