The use of essential oils is gaining in popularity. Essential oils are a concentrated liquid obtained from a plant, and there is no shortage of claims when it comes to what these oils can do. It can be challenging to separate fact from fiction when it comes to claims surrounding essential oils.
There are some studies that indicate that peppermint oil in particular can be helpful for relieving nausea. It has previously been used medically to relieve indigestion and chest congestion, as well as a local anesthetic. In a 1997 study at Liverpool University in England, peppermint oil, which is taken from the leaves of the peppermint plant, helped patients experiencing postoperative nausea.
Here are a few different ways that you could incorporate peppermint oil to relieve nausea:
- Put 3 to 4 drops of peppermint oil into a pan of hot water. Put your face over the pan so that you inhale the steam.
- Add 3 to 4 drops of peppermint oil to a humidifier. Turn the humidifier on overnight and place it by your bed.
- Put 3 to 4 drops of peppermint oil onto a rag or handkerchief. Place the rag into a plastic bag. Open the bag and inhale the peppermint oil whenever you feel nauseous.
As always, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor before using any home remedies. Peppermint oil is not recommended for pregnant women or children, and can be toxic in large amounts.
